The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has introduced ambitious requirements for Formula One racing cars to be powered by sustainable low carbon fuels from 2026.
This is one of numerous measures to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the regulator’s Environmental Strategy 2020-2030. Formula 1 has long served as a platform for introducing next generation advancements in the automotive world. The adoption of sustainable fuel in hybrid engines features heavily in Formula 1’s roadmap to achieving net zero by 2030. Sustainable fuels will be developed to meet stringent FIA technical specifications.
The FIA ‘2026 Formula 1 Technical Regulations’ specifies standards for advanced sustainable fuels and their associated advanced sustainable components (ASC). The ASC Supply Chain Assurance Scheme (ASCAS) has been developed by Zemo Partnership to independently verify the chain of custody for ASC, ensuring compliance with the FIA’s regulatory standards. ASC performance standards include feedstock sustainability, life cycle greenhouse gas emission disclosure, prohibiting co-processing of sustainable and non-sustainable material, plus sustainable material traceability across the entire ASC supply chain.
ASCAS operates alongside the Sustainable Racing Fuel Assurance Scheme (SRFAS). SRFAS provides independent assurance of the deployment of the sustainable, low carbon fuels at Formula One Championships from 2026. Zemo Partnership is the scheme manager for SRFAS and ASCAS, responsible for administering both schemes.
If your company is interested in becoming approved under ASCAS, please email Zemo Partnership for further information.
